Since the beginning of 2023, the Israeli Occupation Authorities have issued 501 notifications to demolish Palestinian facilities under the pretext of being non-licensed. Most of these notifications were concentrated in Hebron governorates (142 notifications) and Bethlehem governorate (92 notifications). Meanwhile, the rest of these notifications were concentrated in the governorates of Salfit, Jenin, and Jerusalem. Each of these governorate received more than 100 notifications.
Those who follow up the distribution of notifications will notice that most of these notifications were concentrated in the south of Hebron, specifically in Masafer Yatta area, whose residents are seriously threatened with forced displacement. In the south, specifically in Bethlehem governorate, the area witnesses many colonial plans, which have come to be called the E2 plan, which aims to Isolate Palestinian villages and towns from each other and to segregate these villages from their Palestinian context. This colonial plan also aims to create a geographical connection between the existing colonies there.
The demolition notices issued by the Israeli Occupation Authorities in the West Bank are considered one of the occupation’s tools in besieging the Palestinians in the area classified “C” and preventing them from developing and expanding in light of the Israeli occupation’s control over planning in those areas. That is, the Israeli government prevents the Palestinians from their right in preparing their own master plans and opposes approving these plans in case if presented to the Israeli civil administration. The Palestinians seek to make use of Area C, which represents 61% of the total area of the West Bank, while the Israel occupation aims at keeping these lands for the expansion of colonies, as a strategic reserve for them in the future.
As for the past year, 2022, a remarkable increase was recorded in the number of notifications submitted to Palestinian citizens, as the number of notifications handed in all governorates of the West Bank was 1220 notifications, the thing which reflects a significant increase compared to previous years. That is, the number of demolition notifications submitted in the previous year, 2021, was 875, compared to 817 for the year 2020. However, the year of 2022[1] set a new record indicating new policies and new tendencies of the Israeli civil administration regarding the Palestinian construction and the natural growth of Palestinian villages and towns.
